Ocean energy as Renewable Energy #UPSC

Government of India has set an ambitious target of installing 175gw of renewable energy capacity by the year 2022, having installed 36.6 GW of on-grid and 1.17 GW of off-grid. renewables which includes 100 GW from solar, 60 GW from wind,10 GW from bio power and 5 GW from small hydro-power. Renewable energy category includes one more source which is ocean energy has been declared as a renewable energy source.

RPO make it compulsory for all large consumers to ensure that a certain percentage of their consumption of their energy is from renewable sources such as wind and solar. Government of India has put some obligations to manufacturing companies that they should use at least some percentage of consumption of their energy should be from renewable resources by planting solar panels etc. Percentage is decided by the State Government of that particular State. But, it is hurting to manufacturing industries as cost of implanting the solar panels are huge which is not acceptable to some industrialist/businessman.

Our earth is covered with 70% oceans which has tremendous potential to generate energy. India has a big coastline. Government of India set a target of 176gw by the year 2022 and by doing this, goal will be reached easily and new industries will be established which will bring employment and which results in economic growth of our Country.

Total identified potential of Tidal Energy is about 12,455 mw with locations identified at Khambat and Kutch regions and the total theoretical potential of wave energy in India along the country's coast estimated to be about 40,000 mw these are preliminary estimates.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) has a theoretical potential of 180,000 mw in India in technological evolution .
